SEQUOIA & KINGS CANYON NATIONAL PARK - SEPT. 2002

Welcome to the Photo Gallery for the Sequoia National Park Controlled Burn Site. The National Park Service conducted this prescribed burn near Grant Grove Village, home to the famous General Grant tree and many other stately Sequoias, which are among the oldest living things on the planet.

The prescribed burns are now being scheduled periodically in the Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Park to reduce the accumulation of biomass fuel in an area that had not been exposed to major wildfires for more than 100 years. The National Park Service's concern is that this long buildup of fuel could result in a catastrophic wildfire that would threaten the normally fire resistant Sequoias.

The photographs provide a visual account of the FireALERT field test in a mixed Conifer forest under near wildfire conditions.
