Jasper Ridge Biological Preserve, PHASE II / Stanford University
The Jasper Ridge Early Warning Wildfire Detection and Alarm System was inaugurated with the installation of three FireALERT-DC units by members of Ambient’s field engineering staff on the 4th and 5th of August 2003. Complete FireALERT-DC coverage of Jasper Ridge is anticipated by next wildfire season after a thorough testing of the equipment in this environment.

These third generation FireALERT-DC units are equipped with advanced imaging optics and on-board satellite modems that communicate through the Globalstar Low Earth Orbit Satellite system. This communication system has been especially designed to handle all daily check-in and alarm transmissions from the FireALERT-DC units. When a transmission occurs from any FireALERT unit, the director of Jasper Ridge is alerted via pager and email as are all appropriate Jasper Ridge staff members.

Certain Ambient employees directly associated with this project are also alerted via email and via text messaging on their cell phones. The text messaging contains FireALERT system specific information. This steady stream of data provides Ambient’s engineering staff with valuable performance information that will be used to track and further enhance the FireALERT-DC along with the satellite communication network.
